How is the sea floor usually explored?
- We explore the bottom of the sea through submarines.
Meet the submarines
Some small submarines can go as low as six thousand meters. They are fast and easy to drive, and are also equipped with portholes, which are like little round windows. Thanks to these submarines it has been possible to know the bottom of the oceans, a wonderful landscape formed by plains, mountains and very deep trenches.
Important discoveries
Thanks to submarines, the seabed has been explored in the seas around the world, such as in Japan, where it was found that the seabed moved a lot; fact that gave the explanation of why so many earthquakes in the area. In other areas, such as in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, the remains of a famous ocean liner, the Titanic, were discovered that collided with an iceberg in 1912 and sank, becoming one of the most popular ships in history.
The deepest pit
The deepest place in the world is the so-called Mariana Trench, in the Pacific Ocean. It measures 11,000 meters, that is, 11 kilometers deep. Thanks to the small submarines, it was possible to discover the bottom in which unknown creatures live, strange deep-sea fish and even colonies of giant worms.
WE LEARN A NEW CONCEPT
Trench: A trench is a huge hole very deep in the sea floor, dug by the movements of the Earth’s surface.
