Homeschooling: when education is received at home

Homeschooling is re-emerging today as the method of choice for many families for the education of their children around the world. Although learning at home may not be well seen by all parents and educators, the truth is that it is an option for the moment just as viable as the traditional one and that it is protected by the legislation of many countries. Therefore, families that decide on this path are exercising their legal freedom to choose the approach they consider most appropriate with respect to the education of their children.

But this is nothing new about Homeschooling and in Canada, for example, until the last century most of the education was given at home. The nuclear families lived together and in close proximity to their extended families and all worked together to support the family unit. Wealthy families employed tutors to homeschool their children, and children from working-class families learned from hands-on experiences with family members of all generations in their own homes, something that would begin to change with industrialization.

Why choose a homeschooling?

There are many reasons why parents choose to homeschool their children. The common element found in most decisions of this type is a strong belief in family unity and in the family’s legal right to educational choice and the flexibility that accompanies it.

In these families it is very important that the people who are loved are present in order to support their children in the learning experiences of life. They want to share the joy of their children’s discovery, to see that mistakes lead to new experimentation, new possibilities, exciting discoveries, and meaningful achievements… all in a personal and personal way.

Parents of this type of family, like many others, consider that their primary function is to nurture, guide and support their children in all aspects of physical, intellectual, language, emotional, social and spiritual development. Therefore, one’s vision of the world will play a very important role in the decision to homeschool, since it takes a lot of strength and determination to follow a different path than most people.

Pros and cons of learning at home

At a time when public education seems to need profound changes , many parents are making the decision to homeschool. Learning at home provides people of all ages the opportunity to interact with one another in an environment of mutual respect, conducive to the expression of sincere opinions and the enjoyment of the most precious rights and freedoms. Other benefits of learning at home are:

  • Reduced learning spaces.
  • Individualized plans and programs.
  • Curriculum development based on the interests and abilities of each individual child.
  • Possibility of moving forward only when the child is ready.
  • Have students spend as much time on a topic or project as necessary.
  • Flexible hours and comfortable environment.
  • Activities appropriate for individual development.
  • The teacher really knows the student.
  • Full participation of parents in decisions and implementation of the school program.

The cons to this type of education are the possibility that these parents do not have the necessary training to teach all the basic and advanced knowledge to their children, that the children end up somewhat away from the general social nucleus, or that normally there is no as much free time as to do this at home, not even considering that it is the best option, so it can be a type of education available to a privileged few.
