The topic of homework is controversial today and has always been. Charging a child with homework when he has spent 8 hours at school is illogical to say the least . Especially if we take into account that this child must have time to play, be with his family, do sports or other activities, or simply relax.

We believe that in the middle is the key and that things can always be seen differently. This is how we focus on the advantages of doing homework and the nuances that we think are necessary.

  1. First start sending homework when the child is older . It does not make much sense to have homework in the early childhood education cycle and even in the first years of primary school, unless it is something specific such as collecting material for class or some exercise that is fun to do with parents.
  1. Share knowledge at home . It is very positive to know what our children are doing in school and to see how they are doing, so we know what they need more support or what they like the most. Spending at least a little time with them while they do homework can be rewarding and fun. Ideally, we should maintain a close relationship with the teachers, meet regularly to exchange views.
  1. Quality versus quantity . Do not exaggerate with the tasks and send few homework but that are interesting. Today with the Internet, most of the tasks that previously needed an investigation are now solved with a copy and paste of Wikipedia. That is why it is convenient to innovate and “force” the child to think with exercises that aim to draw conclusions or contrast opinions and experiences of their own or those of others, in which it is not possible to find the solution on the Internet. The more creative the better.
  1. Review inadvertently . It is obvious that if you see the concepts learned in the morning again, you will notice more. The secret is to create a pleasant and comfortable environment, as well as a routine. They will make homework a habit with which they will better retain the information seen. And bear in mind that the concepts must be exclusively reviewed, because if they are new or little worked, it may happen that the child does not understand and becomes frustrated by not being able to do them correctly
  1. Constancy, discipline and autonomy . They acquire without realizing these essential values for their future and if they were to study a degree they would be grateful because they will need some organization and will to overcome it successfully.
  1. They practice basic educational skills . Vocabulary, writing, calculus agility, basic math, spelling, writing – these skills are used while doing homework and it’s a great way to train daily and improve in these areas.

Without exceeding the quantity and aimed at consolidating topics that can be developed by the student himself, they should be an important asset in the child’s educational process and the perfect complement to school. Of course, it would be great if teachers could agree and divide the days, because with 9 subjects it is very easy to overload with exercises even if each one sends little work.

And do you think?
