The dog days of summer may be behind us, but there’s no better time for a good book!  Dog stories are frequently requested at our house, so I thought I’d share some of our favorites with you!

The Great Gracie Chase: Stop That Dog! by Cynthia Rylant and Mark Teague is a fun story about a dog who likes a quiet house.  But when the noisy painters come, Gracie leads the whole town on one wild chase.

Please, Puppy, Please by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee is full of rhyme, with a wonderfully unique rhythm that’s fun to read and listen to.  The pictures by Kadir Nelson are among some of my all time favorites.  An absolutely beautiful book in every way!

Doggone Dogs is an uproariously silly book!  Written by Karen Beaumont, it’s a fast-paced crazy story of ten mischievous dogs, and their beleaguered owner.  With addictively fun phrases like “Super Duper Pooper Scoopers”, this story does a great job of incorporating strong literacy-building elements in with a purely enjoyable story.

Zoomer is the first in a new series of books by Ned Young.  The second, Zoomer’s Summer Snowstorm came out early this summer and is a fabulously creative story about a young dog and all the crazy adventures he can have with a snow cone maker.  The first book features Zoomer as he dodges his dad so he can build a brontosaurus from sand, land a rocket on the roof, and blow bubbles out of a tuba .  Imaginative and fun! (And right now, the hard cover edition is on sale at Amazonfor just $6.80!)
